The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying the public his plans for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and recently research forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the White House in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the meek shall die from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the chief executive try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more slowly, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding about him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of a mighty king emerging; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The obvious and direct fact that the Jesus from scripture requests a type of extreme compassion focused on the needy has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: appealing to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Highest of Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the determined opposition to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to help build the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts in US history.

The nation is most protected, essentially, by reference to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus.
